The Contemporary Criminology Study Group (GECC) was born in a pub in Cidade Baixa, Porto Alegre. Academics, researchers and curious people interested in reading and discussing criminological works met fortnightly at Mondo Cane. The Saturday meetings started mid-afternoon - and often went on into the evening. Due to contingencies and opportunities, the meetings were later transferred to the virtual environment.

In seven years of activity, with almost two hundred meetings and different generations of participants, GECC has been a space for reading and discussing lots of criminological texts; it has interacted with other study groups; it has taken part in academic events in Brazil and abroad; it has welcomed national and international guests, and also important Brazilian writers (
Reading Project); it has drawn up opinions on bills and analysed legislative changes; it has developed the Observatory of Legislative Production; it launched its own scientific journal; it has contributed with the publication of books, articles and translations, all of which are free and open access; it has inspired researchers, built bridges and bonds of friendship.

At the end of 2023, the group was reshaped, took on the acronym
CRIMLAB and expanded its activities to the international scale (Brazil-UK), continuing with two projects:

• The
Dictionary of Criminology, running since 2020, aims to be a reference work for researchers and a historical record of contemporary issues. The entries are developed in a joint process, in which the authors accompany each other’s work, and in phases to make the most of learning and standardise the content.

• The
Prêmio Mundo Cão of Criminological Literature, launched in 2023, aims to evaluate, award and highlight Criminology books published in Brazil.

GECC/CRIMLAB has always been autonomous, not subordinated to educational institutions, government bodies and political parties. Its main mission has been to promote criminological knowledge and share it with society.
